Migraine

— Homemaker & Mom

I had a number of health issues over a period of about 6 years prior to beginning treatment at Zanjabee. The list of issues included migraine headaches, dizziness, nausea, exhaustion, depression, weight gain, acid reflux, gall bladder attacks, heartburn, extreme stress, muscle pain and tension, breast pain, chest pain, heart palpitations, irritability, and other numerous irritations. My quality of life had suffered tremendously due to these debilitating conditions. I would have weeks at a time when I was barely able to care for my child, due to daily migraines and accompanying nausea and exhaustion. My life was incredibly stressful from the pressure of being a stay-at-home Mom, responsible for my child’s care, when I could not even take care of myself and regularly had to push through debilitating symptoms in order to accomplish basic life tasks.

I had sought relief from a number of traditional medical doctors as well as numerous alternative medicine techniques. I’d seen my primary care, my OB, an osteopath, a neurologist, a gastroenterologist, a cardiologist and multiple psychologists, and had received treatment in chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, nutritional response therapy, muscle testing, energy healing, sound therapy, Ayurvedic cleansing, yoga, meditation and others. I had invested enormous amounts of my time, energy, and money pursuing treatment in a desperate attempt to relieve some of the symptoms.

In the course of pursuing traditional medicine, I had been put on many, many prescription medications that often left me in worse shape than I had started. I would typically have little or no improvement in my condition while experiencing horrendous side effects, which would then require more medication to manage. I felt I was circling the drain. I would then abandon medication in favor of alternative therapies. Over the years I did experience some improvement in symptoms. Unfortunately, I was regularly put in a position where I had to figure out how to manage the conflicting recommendations of my doctors and my alternative therapists. They simply did not work together and prescribed treatment plans that just couldn’t work together. I would be left on my own to piece together a strategy from all the different pieces of the puzzle. Although I know my body incredibly well, I really didn’t know what was the best approach. I craved a doctor and a practice where modern medicine and alternative medicine could not only co-exist, but work together for the good of the patient as a whole person.

I met Dr. Ali just before her practice opened at Zanjabee. When she told me that she had on her staff a massage therapist, an acupuncturist, and an Ayurvedic specialist, I could not believe my ears! She was a trained medical physician who understood the value of diet, lifestyle, and stress management to a person’s health and well-being. Moreover, she did not begin treatment with prescriptions, but with lifestyle recommendations and alternative therapies. Her staff worked together to treat the whole patient, not just their symptoms. I knew right then and there that Zanjabee was the practice I had been looking for and didn’t think existed.

My treatment at Zanjabee has consisted of several key focus areas. First, Dr. Ali recognized that stress was the primary driver in most of my symptoms, and she has worked with me to strategize how to reduce stress – looking at root causes, managing expectations, teaching breathing exercises, coaching me on self-care. She looks at what is behind the symptom and addresses the underlying issue. This is a rare and refreshing experience! Dr. Ali is warm, caring, and extremely supportive. She is also incredibly knowledgeable and extremely current on medical research, ordering tests for me when appropriate and uses medication when needed. I feel she uses the ideal balance of modern and alternative approaches and I trust her judgment completely.

Dr. Ali also asked me to use a combination of massage and acupuncture to support my physical and emotional healing. I have seen Karen for massage and Lee for acupuncture. The combination of the two treatments have given me deep, restorative healing and rest for my body. Karen tailors my massage to exactly what I need that day. She really listens to what is going on for me and has an intuitive sense of what approach would be best – whether it is a deep tissue massage to address tension contributing to migraines, or a relaxing and restorative full-body massage to help ease stress and relax my nervous system. She is also a great listener and I feel I can share anything with her.

Lee is an amazing healer. I have received so much benefit from her acupuncture treatments and I could actually feel my overall health improving as I continued to see her on a regular basis. The treatments definitely had a cumulative effect and I felt I was finally on a path to the kind of vitality and health that had been so elusive for so long. She has targeted her treatments to support my digestion, to improve my hormonal balance, to relax and calm my nervous system, and to address my migraines. I have seen significant improvements in all these areas. Lee is an exceptional listener. In her care, I feel completely and utterly supported. She deeply resonated with my issues and always mirrored for me how real and how difficult the circumstances were that I was facing. After our session I would leave feeling like she helped me to see my own stress in a way that really made me take seriously the need to care for myself, be gentle with myself, and give my body the rest it needed. I would tend to just soldier on in the face of adversity, and Lee would help me see that I needed to honor what was going on and be kinder to myself. Seeing that and then doing that for myself was probably the single biggest key to my overall improvement. Lee was the catalyst for that shift in consciousness.

I have seen a consistent improvement in my overall health through my care at Zanjabee. I no longer take any regular medication, and have a much improved quality of life. My major symptoms have been significantly reduced, to the point where I have occasional flare-ups but my day-to-day health is quite good. I feel my own intuition around what I need is much improved, so that over time I am better able to manage my own stress and see when I need to take more time for self-care.

I would absolutely recommend Zanjabee to family and friends. I feel so grateful to have a place to go where I can receive top-notch medical care and also amazing and effective treatment without the use of medication. At Zanjabee the treatment is truly integrative – I don’t have to choose or figure out for myself if my condition can be managed with diet or acupuncture or stress reduction or if I really do need medication. Dr. Ali and her staff can make those recommendations based on their incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise, and then provide that holistic treatment. They care for me as a person, not as a list of symptoms. I love the practice and feel very blessed to have access to the exceptional quality of care that Dr. Ali and her staff provide.
